Motivating your staff is one of the most important tasks you face as a leader. After all, your employees are the lifeblood of your business. Without their hard work and dedication, your business simply can't thrive.

But whatâs the key to motivating them â and keeping them motivated for the long haul?
Â
Unfortunately, there are plenty of roadblocks that can get in the way of your success. If you're struggling to keep your team engaged and motivated, it could be due to one of three big issues.

Hello and welcome to Episode 159 of the People Powered Business Podcast. Today weâre discussing why Hiring (and holding onto) the Wrong Employee Impacts Team Morale.
The truth is, weâve all made bad hiring choices in the past, it happens, but when we hold onto the wrong people it can have a significant effect on the entire team. It impacts productivity, it impacts momentum, it impacts mood and impacts motivation and morale.
So in todayâs episode Iâm sharing how to identify the early warning signs that youâve hired the wrong person. We also unpack the reasons we are tempted to hold onto these wrong hires, and why we can be so resistant to do something about it. Hello and welcome to Episode 157 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today weâre talking about the 3 biggest mistakes I see business owners and managers make when it comes to motivating their teams. These road blocks really do hold back their success when it comes to building a motivated and high performing team, yet they are completely avoidable.
Â
#1 â Youâre failing to provide clear goals and objectives. When people arenât clear whatâs expected of them they become disengaged very quickly. They can be confused, which leads to frustration, which in turn impacts motivation. Being clear is not mean or bossy, in fact itâs the opposite. As Brene Brown says âclear is kind, unclear is unkindâ.
Â
#2 â Youâre micromanaging. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the micromanager. The person that is hovering so closely over every detail of what your employee is doing they feel like they canâ breathe without your permission. Micromanagement erodes trust faster than you can imagine, and...

Learning how to transform your team from good to great requires understanding the foundations of motivation, supporting bottom-up problem-solving, and building a culture of trust, vision, and belonging.
Â
It sounds simple, right?
Â
But if it was that simple you probably wouldnât be reading this.
Â
As a leader, itâs invaluable to invest in your own strategic professional development as well as that of your team.
Â
What would your business or organisation look like if you were leading a motivated and high performing team? Would you and your team feel more sense of purpose, achievement, and solidarity? Would your bottom lines and KPIs be easier to meet because there are less obstacles and resistance in the way?
Â
At People Powered HR we identified 3 key areas that are crucial to level up average or low performing teams to motivated and high performing teams â but it requires all three of these areas to be nurtu...
Understanding how to motivate your team can be one of the biggest challenges business owners, managers and leaders face. Finding the right people for your business is just the first step, once you have the players in place, getting the most out of them, motivating them and pushing for greater productivity and motivation is an ongoing pain point which can often feel like some sort of secret witchcraft.
Â
For many managers, when thinking of ways to motivate staff, our automatic default is to entice them with some form of incentive, or show them recognition with some sort of gift, reward or show of gratitude. Some people even think that the bigger the gesture, the more expensive the gift or reward, the higher the motivation should be.
Â
Then, after outlaying the money, expecting a huge return on their investment by achieving high motivation across the team, they are disappointed, frustrated and resentful that their efforts have had no direct impact, and in fact can sometimes appear to...
Hello and welcome to Episode 156 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today weâre discussing how you can transform your team from Good to GREAT.
Consider this, how would it feel to have a motivated and high performing team? At team who love coming to work, who do amazing quality work, and who you can rely on wholeheartedly.
What would it mean for you to have that team? Maybe you could take a day off, do more of whatâs important to you, even take a holiday!
Maybe it just means less stress, loving your business more or being able to grow.
In todaysâ episode I share three of the foundation strategies to transforming your team from good to great.
Â
"Your mindset matters. It affects everything â from the business decisions you make to the way you lead your team." - Carol Dweck, author of âMindset: The New Psychology of Successâ
Â
Nowhere is this more true than for a leader.
Â
As a boss, you are a leader and mastering your mindset is crucial to your success.
Â
It allows you to approach challenges with clarity and confidence, make better decisions, and inspire and motivate your team. By developing a growth mindset and cultivating resilience, you can become a more effective leader and navigate the ups and downs of running a business with more ease.
Â
Don't underestimate the power of your mindset - invest in your personal growth and see the positive impact it has on your business. Â
Â
The mental game of being a boss can be the most challenging part, requiring resilience and knowing when to have tough conversations. As the boss, you have the power to steer your b...
Hello and welcome to Episode 155 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today weâre revisiting one of our most popular and listened to episodes where I chat about the 2 types of motivation our employees need.
Many employers focus on what we call extrinsic motivators, in that they try and motivate their staff using a source external from the person. Could be a reward, an incentive, a bonus, a gift, lunch â those kinds of things. These thigs usually cost money, and when they donât have the effect the employer was hoping for â in that the employee is not more motivated across the board, or more committed to their role, the employer becomes resentful of the motivation process.
The truth is, these extrinsic motivation techniques can work effectively, but only when the employee is already intrinsically motivated in the role, and as a result engaged. Without this foundation piece of intrinsic motivation, the extrinsic tactics are a short term win at best.
In todaysâ episode we discuss th...
Â
The "Great Resignation" refers to the surge of employees leaving their jobs in search of better opportunities, work-life balance, and job satisfaction driven by the COVID-19 pandemic that kicked off in 2020.
Â
This global event precipitated the shift towards remote work which gave many employees the freedom to reevaluate their priorities and pursue new career paths.
Â
The term was originally coined in the US by organisational psychologist Anthony Klotz in May 2021 to describe the spike in resignations that appeared post-pandemic.
Â
As a result, many employers around the world faced a significant talent crunch, as employees left in search of more fulfilling roles. Companies were scrambling to find ways to retain their top talent, and invested in initiatives such as flexible work arrangements, employee wellness programs, and increased benefits to keep their employees happy and engaged.
Â
The Great Resignation made it clear that traditional wor...
