Put a group of strangers together in a room. Give them some constraints and take away certainty. See what happens.
Â
This is essentially the plot device of many a story by the master of meditating on human nature, Stephen King. It also happens in many workplaces where strangers havenât been nurtured into a team cohesively and consistently. Leave a dysfunctional team alone for long enough and you might eventually think youâre living one of Kingâs horror stories as things get toxic.
Â
This is why leaders are so important in the workplace. |The role and responsibility of leaders are to nurture their team members. Itâs also to catch any issues that start out as weeds before they take firm root in company soil.
Â
But how do you know when you, the leader, are the problem?
Â
As leaders, itâs easy to absolve ourselves immediately and look outward for the issue. And sometimes it is an issue with a system, a process, a situation and ano...

Hello and welcome to Episode 152 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today weâre looking at a burning question I see so many business owners, leaders and managers asking themselves when they have a problem employee on their hands â is it me or is it them?
So often as managers we feel like we are going insane when it comes to our people. we second guess everything we are doing and how it relates to our employees performance â and we always tend to blame ourselves for whatâs happening.
We think we are over working them have a capacity issue, we see that they are just doing enough, but they arenât doing anything wrong so we feel weâre over reacting, the issues are subtle, so maybe they arenât a big deal, or they seem to have an answer for everything, which makes us certain the problem is us.
In reality, sometimes we are to blame when we have a problem with one of our team. Perhaps weâve hired the wrong person for the role, we havenât onboard effectively, we havenât communicated cl...
When the government changes, so do a range of things including compliance. At the end of 2022, we had a look at the first round of Industrial Relations Reforms that were announced and what we could expect in 2023.
Â
Short answer: a lot.
Â
In February 2023, significant changes were made to the Domestic Family & Domestic Violence Leave.
Â
The major difference is that it used to be unpaid leave and is now paid leave. The Labor Government also pledged $153 million to end Family and Domestic Violence so this is a top priority on their agenda while theyâre in office.
Â
We dive deeper further below into the specific changes to this leave entitlement and what you need to be on top of as an employer.
Â
Whatâs becoming clear, however, with the current government is that pleading ignorance around compliance obligations isnât going to cut the mustard anymore and breaches of these new laws are going to be cost...
Hello and welcome to Episode 151 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today is a compliance update on one of the Industrial Relations reforms which have recently been announced.
Back in Episode 140 we introduced the raft of changes coming as part of this reform, with a key focus on job security, protecting employees rights, removing the gender pay gap and continued wage increases. You can listen to that episode here:

Today we looked at one of the changes that is taking effect immediately, as of 1 February 2023, the introduction of Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave into the Fair Work Act and Modern Awards.
For all business employing 15 or more employees, including regular casuals, this change is happening right now. For the rest of you the 1 August 2023 is when this commences for you.
It sees 10 days of Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave become available to all staff, including full time, part time and ca...
Thereâs a reason why Simon Sinekâs Start With Why upended the world of leadership and business when he hit the mainstream with both this talk and the book.
For a long time, the focus in the workplace was on outcomes without connecting their people to the why of those outcomes. We soon realised by using Simonâs framework, that connecting people to the core of why the business exists and exactly how their role impacts the world created stronger relationships, better outcomes, and more innovative thinking.
A fundamental aspect of connecting your people to your business why is running effective team planning sessions. From this connection grows a rich dynamic for your team â but without a well-structured planning session you could be missing out on leveraging the best from your people.
People want purpose.
People want clarity.
People want to belong.
Understanding these driving motivators, and planning sessions are a great opportunity t...

Weâre living through an unprecedented post-pandemic period of transition. Many of us are starting the year feeling completely depleted. Everything feels hard and in some instances, insurmountable.
Â
So, whatâs the deal?
Â
Whether you struggled or thrived through the pandemic, thereâs research being released about the short and long-term impacts on our collective and individual well-being around the world.
Â
The Georgia State University Research Magazine released an article titled Two Years of Trauma in a bid to better understand the lasting legacy of the mental health adversities of the pandemic. Doing the promotional rounds for his latest release, The Myth of Normal, Dr Gabor Maté also talks about the lasting impact of the pandemic as a trauma we are still emerging from.

Hustle culture also isnât all it cracked up to be, and being a boss has never been more complex than it is today. Now, more than eve...
Hello and welcome to Episode 150 of the People Powered Business Podcast.
Today Iâm sharing with you 5 tips for running a successful team planning session.
Back in Episode 147 we spoke about the importance of having a clear team vision for the year, and one thing I recommended was to articulate this vision to the team via some sort of strategy or planning day.
Today I want to unpack why they are so important for our people, how often you should run them, and Iâm sharing my 5 tips for running a successful session.
Tip 1: Align your planning session with the personality of your culture. If you have a team who loves fun and doesnât take themselves to seriously, do not kill the vibe with PowerPoint slides filled with boring detail. Conversely, if you have a data driven and analytical culture, you need to make the data sing and be front and centre of the process;
Tip 2: Make it about more than business targets. Yes the targets are important to articulate, and the vision is important to ...
Hello and welcome to Episode 147 of the People Powered Business Podcast, and welcome to 2023!
Today weâre chatting about your vision for 2023 â for your business and your team.
Â
At this time of year itâs so important to our people that we can give them clarity about whatâs ahead for the year for their roles in the business. They want to know what the future holds and how their role fits into the bigger picture. They want to feel part of something bigger than themselves, and most importantly they want to know how work can help them with their vision and goals for the year.
Â
Last week we spoke about the power of pausing to get the clarity about the future, but having that clarity is no good if we donât share it with our team. So today we discussed some ways to communicate the vision with the team and getting them engaged with the objectives.
Â
In addition today we spoke about capacity planning â do you have the right people on the bus to get you where you want to go?
Â
